Candles and Soaps and Warm Fuzzy Feelings...
http://loveymushythings.com/
I
started making candles from a kit I received as a gift from my cousin in
’95. It was granulated wax that you melted in a plastic bag in a pot of
boiling water. I used a frozen OJ can as a mold. What a mess! I soon got a
real double boiler which made it much neater. When we were getting rid of a
kitchen kettle, I decided to use it to melt wax. Wow! Now I could melt nine
pounds at a time! I’d always made candles for Christmas presents, and
through the years they became nice enough that friends and family were
encouraging me to sell. I’ve learned through the years that it’s more than
just melting chunks of canning wax and putting a few drops of scent from a
bottle you get at the craft store. You have to precisely measure your wax,
additives and fragrance to get the desired effect. You have to pay close
attention to the temperature of the wax while melting and pouring. It is of
the utmost importance to buy fragrances from well respected suppliers. It is
very important to test your wax, wicks and fragrances in all the possible
combinations in order to have a safe and high quality product.
Now I manufacture my candles in the same kitchen kettle, with the addition
of a turkey roaster that holds 25 pound of wax at a time. That much wax will
make 20 to 30 candles, depending upon the size of the molds. I am often
asked how long it takes to make a candle. Well, if I made just one, it would
take 30 minutes one day to wick the mold, melt the wax, add the dye and
fragrance and pour. I’d have to check on it for the next hour or so to poke
relief holes. The next day I would repour to fill the holes. So, probably a
little over an hour total. However, I usually make big 25lb batches. This
would require 4 to 5 hours the first day to melt, wick and pour. Then, it
would require about 2 to 3 hours the next day to repour. So, in one weekend,
working 5 hours a day, I could make about 60 to 70 candles
The story behind the company name is simple. In high school, my friends and
I would sign our letters, "Lovey Mushy Things." When it came time to name
the business, nothing else would do!
